These straw purses are handmade of natural fibre from the Philippines. This weaving tradition dates back to pre-Hispanic influence, the Malay art of weaving. Pandan leaves are braided, dyed, and woven intricately to create this versatile bag perfect for the summer. Once Pandan leaves are woven, they are called Banig. Banig has also been used as a mat for sleeping. However, creativity has extended the utility of the Banig into the fashion arena.
