These straw purses are handmade of natural fibre from the Philippines. This weaving tradition dates back to pre-Hispanic influence, the Malay art of weaving. Pandan leaves were braided, dyed, and woven intricately to create this versatile bag perfect for the summer. Other natural fibres that you see below are make of Banig, specifically, of coconut tree leaves. Other Banig style can be made of Buri palm tree or sea grass leaves. Banig has also been used as a mat for sleeping. However, creativity has extended the utility of the Banig into the fashion arena.
